    What we collect and why

    Visiting the site

Our hosting provider, Vercel, processes technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, so that the site can be delivered and kept secure. We do not run analytics or advertising trackers. Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your browser's local storage and is never sent to us.

    Newsletter

If you subscribe, we collect your email address and a record that you ticked the consent box, with the time. We use it only to send you the newsletter. A confirmation email asks you to confirm before you are added, and every email has an unsubscribe link.

    Walkthrough submissions

If you submit a walkthrough, we collect its title, your display name, the link to your write-up, optionally your email address, and a record that you ticked the consent box, with the time. We use these to review your submission. If it is approved, your display name and link are published next to the exercise. We use your email only to contact you about the submission. Submissions wait in a private moderation queue, and nothing is published without a person approving it.

    Security check

The forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. It loads from Cloudflare only when you start filling in a form. Cloudflare processes information about your browser and device for that purpose, under its own privacy policy.

    Search

The search box on this site works in your browser. When you first open it, your browser downloads the site's search index from this site, and what you type is matched on your own device. Your searches are not sent to us or to anyone else.

    Videos

Some exercises may embed a video. It loads from YouTube, using its privacy-enhanced address, only after you press play.

    Our legal basis

We process personal information with your consent, for the newsletter and for submissions. We also process technical data where it is needed to run and secure the site, which is a legitimate interest that does not unreasonably affect your privacy.

    Who we share it with

We do not sell personal information. These providers process it for us:

    • Vercel: hosting.
    • GitHub: a private repository that works as the moderation queue.
    • Buttondown: sending the newsletter and managing subscriptions.
    • Cloudflare: the Turnstile security check.

    Transfers outside South Africa

These providers may store and process information in other countries, including the United States. We cannot control where they keep it, so the forms ask for your consent and name this transfer before you send anything.

    How long we keep it

    • Newsletter: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your address.
    • Approved submissions: your display name and link stay published until you ask us to remove them. Once a submission has been reviewed we remove your email address from the queue record.
    • Rejected submissions: deleted from the queue within 90 days.
    • Server logs: kept by our hosting provider under its own retention schedule.

    Security

Access to the moderation queue is limited to the site owner, and the site connects to it with an access token limited to that one repository. No system is completely secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify the Information Regulator and, where required, you.

    Your rights

    • Ask what personal information we hold about you.
    • Ask us to correct or delete it.
    • Object to processing, or withdraw your consent at any time, using the unsubscribe link in any newsletter or by emailing us. Withdrawing does not affect processing that already happened lawfully.
    • Complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za. We would appreciate the chance to fix the problem first.

    Children

This site is not intended for children under 18, and they should not use its forms.

    Changes

We may update this policy. The date at the top shows the latest version.
